About the Book

In the intricate tapestry of Earth's ecosystems, soil stands as a foundation, supporting life in its myriad forms. Yet, beneath its seemingly unassuming surface lies a world of complexity, where the interplay of natural processes and human activities shapes its properties and functions in profound ways. Within this realm, certain soils present unique challenges, testing the limits of our understanding and resourcefulness. It is to these soils that the present volume is dedicated. "Problematic Soils and Their Management" emerges from a collective endeavor to unravel the mysteries of soils that defy conventional wisdom and demand innovative solutions. As editors, we have been privileged to assemble a distinguished cadre of researchers, practitioners, and thought leaders whose collective expertise spans the breadth of soil science and allied disciplines. Their contributions form the backbone of this book, offering insights gleaned from decades of research, experimentation, and fieldwork. The genesis of this book lies in a recognition of the urgent need to address the myriad challenges posed by problematic soils. Whether it be the acidic soils of tropical rainforests, the saline-alkaline soils of arid regions, or the contaminated soils of industrial landscapes, each presents its own unique set of obstacles to sustainable land use and ecosystem health. Yet, embedded within these challenges are opportunities for innovation, discovery, and stewardship.
