Agronomy forms the backbone of agricultural science, integrating knowledge from various disciplines to ensure efficient, sustainable, and productive crop cultivation. With the rapid transformation of agriculture to meet the needs of a growing population and changing climate, the need for a strong foundational understanding of agronomic principles has never been more crucial. This book, Fundamentals of Agronomy, is written in accordance with the syllabus prescribed by the ICAR 6th Deans’ Committee and aims to serve as a comprehensive guide for undergraduate students pursuing studies in agriculture and allied fields.
The book begins with an introduction to the concept and scope of agronomy, explaining its significance as the art, science, and business of crop production. It establishes the interrelationship of agronomy with other branches of agricultural sciences, thereby offering students a holistic view of the discipline. The importance of field crops, their classification, and their role in various ecosystems is also highlighted
