Legal education has long been recognized as the cornerstone of a just, democratic, and progressive society. It is through legal education that the ideals enshrined in the Constitution are translated into practice, the rule of law is strengthened, and future custodians of justice are prepared to meet the evolving needs of society. In an era characterized by rapid technological advancement, globalization, interdisciplinary learning, and transformative legal reforms, the need to critically examine the present and future of legal education has never been more significant. It is within this context that the idea for this edited volume, Indian Legal Education in the 21st Century: Tradition Meets Innovation, was conceived. India possesses one of the oldest and most vibrant legal traditions in the world. Rooted in centuries of jurisprudential thought and enriched by constitutional values, Indian legal education has continuously evolved to respond to changing societal, economic, and political realities. From the establishment of the earliest law faculties to the emergence of National Law Universities, clinical legal education, digital learning platforms, and multidisciplinary institutions under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the journey of legal education reflects both resilience and transformation. Yet, this evolution also presents new opportunities and challenges that demand thoughtful academic engagement and innovative solutions.
